About Alto Lindoso Dam

Alto Lindoso dam on the river Lima is one of Portugal's largest hydroelectric facilities, located in the mountainous Peneda-Gerês National Park region near the Spanish border. Completed in 1992, the concrete gravity dam stands 110 metres tall and holds 379 million cubic metres. The dam was built as part of an agreement between Portugal and Spain for shared management of the Lima river system. Its primary purpose is hydroelectric generation, with a power station that can produce significant peak power. The reservoir sits in a deep valley surrounded by the granite peaks and ancient oak forests of the national park, one of the last refuges of the Iberian wolf and other endangered species.
